Saundra Reid Torrence

Saundra Reid Torrence (Sandie), the daughter of George and Margaret Reid, was born in Charlotte, NC on August 8, 1956. After a prolonged struggle with several health issues, Sandie departed this earthly life to be with the Lord on June 21, 2024, at Presbyterian hospital in Charlotte holding the hand of her beloved husband and lifelong friend David. After graduating from Independence High School in 1974, Sandie went on to attend North Carolina Central University in Durham, NC. However, for family reasons, she transferred to University of North Carolina Charlotte where she received her bachelor’s degree in business administration. She began her career in business almost immediately after college with employment at Mechanics and Farmers Bank in Charlotte. She later accepted a position at First Legacy Credit Union (originally School Workers Credit Union) in Charlotte. Sandie then went on to obtain her master’s degree in credit union management from the University of Georgia. It didn’t take long before her talents were fully recognized. She became the president and CEO of First Legacy where she worked for more than 32 years. During that time, the credit union experienced substantial growth from a single branch to five branches throughout western North Carolina. The growth of the credit union was attributable in large part to the passion and love she had for her community and her clients. They reciprocated. Sandie’s reputation and experience served the credit union community well where she was often called upon for advice by those seeking to organize a new credit union. Sandie’s other great love was for Friendship Missionary Baptist Church. She was a faithful member and would go on to serve as a trustee. Sandie was preceded in death by her parents George and Margaret Reid and her sister Margie Fleming. Left to cherish her memory, loving husband David of 11 years (but friends since childhood); two sisters Patricia Davis and Pamela Reid; brother-in-law Timothy (Chuck) Davis; nieces Laurin Davis, Erika Burwell (Trey); brother George Funderburk (Lystra); goddaughter Minnie McPherson; sisters-in-law Jean Douglas; nephews Darryl Fleming, Neil, Robbie and Jeremy Funderburk; niece Charity Herron and a host of additional godchildren, cousins and dear friends.
