Hazel Lamar Simond

At first glance, you might think the name “So Big” referred to his physical stature. But those who knew him understood it was something much bigger -- So Big had a big personality, a big spirit, and an even bigger heart. He made space for people, for laughter, for fun, and for love. Wherever he went, he brought natural warmth and a magnetic presence that left a lasting impression. Ironically, So Big started small. As a baby, even though he was tiny, his mom used to say he was soooo big. Although he quickly grew, the name stuck. Not many people could have lived up to a nickname like So Big. But Hazel Lamar Simond made it look easy. A native of Charlotte, North Carolina, he was born on July 20, 1967 to Hazel Simond and Barbara Clay Simond. A graduate of Olympic High School, Big was a talented athlete, particularly on the basketball court. He went on to attend Barber-Scotia College, where his mom served as the school nurse. So Big was always good with his hands and could fix anything. This natural ability eventually led him to the Charlotte Convention Center’s maintenance department where he worked as an Electrical Engineer. During the 22 years he spent there, he took great pride in his work and was elevated to the position of Engineering Supervisor. Family was the heart of So Big’s world. He and his former wife, Maricka Mouzon, welcomed a daughter into the world, Halee Deve Simond, who was his pride and joy. He was a loving father and a loving grandfather to his two grandchildren Hayden and Eden. He also loved his bonus children: Jermaine White, Brittany White, Teri Stinson, and Kwante Stinson. For many years, he shared a life of love, laughter, and partnership with Vera Stinson, his longtime companion, whose presence in his life was both grounding and uplifting. He loved grilling outdoors, entertaining friends, and spending time with Canan, his beloved Cane Corso. So Big is survived by his siblings Charles Clay, Ronald Simond, and Joseph van Dullemen. He was preceded in death by parents, Hazel and Barbara Clay Simond and his beloved brother, Bobbye Simond. He will be greatly missed by a plethora of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, coworkers, and friends. His legacy is one of love & laughter, connection & craftsmanship -- a life lived So Big in every way.
