Hattie Marie Carter

Hattie Marie Carter, age 92, passed away peacefully on October 26, 2024, in Charlotte, North Carolina. Born on January 2, 1932, in Anne Arundel County, Maryland, she was the beloved second child of Howard and Rosetta (Taylor) Carter. Affectionately known as Marie, she brought joy and warmth to all who knew her, leaving behind a legacy of kindness, resilience, and song. Marie attended school in Bridgeville, Delaware, and dedicated her life to caring for others through her work in domestic service. For over 44 years, she was a cherished member of the Dritz family, where she touched the lives of their family with her steadfast dedication, loyalty, and gentle heart. Beyond her work, Marie found a second family among her friends and neighbors, who admired her lively spirit and cherished her for her countless acts of kindness. A woman of many talents, Marie was an accomplished singer with the group The Five Jubilees, sharing her voice and love for music with those around her. Whether she was singing or spending time with her loved ones, Marie was always the life of the gathering. Known for her love of games, she was a skilled player of dominoes and Connect Four—a reputation that preceded her. Friends and family alike would light up at the sight of her, knowing a memorable and lively game was sure to follow. Marie’s presence was a gift to her family and her community. She leaves behind a legacy of love, friendship, and laughter that will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing her. She is preceded in death by her parents Howard and Rosetta (Taylor) Carter; and her sister Helen Miller. She leaves behind to cherish her memories with her only child, her son Calvin G. (Cendia) Carter (Charlotte, NC); her sister, Louise Harris (Bloomfield, CT); her grandchildren Nichelle Perry (Charlotte, NC), Calvin (Tamika) Carter (Dallas, TX), Tiffany (Rodrick) Parham (Montgomery, AL), Desmond Carter (Charlotte, NC) and Marshunda (Andre) Anderson (Charlotte, NC) and a host of great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and cherished friends. A memorial service will be held to honor Marie’s life and the joy she brought to those around her. May her soul rest in peace, as her memory lives on through those who loved her.
