Charles Eli Johnson

Charles Eli Johnson (Stump) was born on March 12, 1938 to the late Elliott Johnson and Curlie Lee Johnson in Charlotte, North Carolina. On September 2nd, 1978 Myra Stanley, became his loving wife. He passed away peacefully, surrounded by family and friends on Thursday, February 5th, 2026. Charles has been associated with the Morning Star Baptist Church, which his dear Mother Curlie Lee helped start over 60 years ago. He was a good and faithful servant who loved the Lord with all his mind, body, and soul. Charles always had a love for motorized vehicles. As a teenager, because of his driving skill and sense of responsibility for the students from his community, he became a school bus driver while attending Torrence Lytle High School in Huntersville, North Carolina. After that , he started driving tractor trailers for a who’s-who of the top trucking companies in the Charlotte area. Some of the companies he blessed with his talent were; Speas Vinegar Company, Morris Speizman Company, Inc., Standard Trucking Company, McClean Trucking Company and Consolidated Freightways. He retired from Consolidated in 2000, thus ending over 60 years of excellence and dedication to his profession. Charles was a man of many talents athletically. He was described by his peers as one of the greatest athletes to come out of the Davidson/Charlotte area. His family and friends still remember and tell great stories of his exploits on the football fields and baseball diamonds as a Torrence-Lytle High School student. He loved his family, his friends and his garden! People always said he had a green thumb. Boy, he could make anything grow. He loved to fish and hunt as any young man would living in an area as rich in natural beauty like ours. Music was also important to his well-being, and he shared that love with everyone he met. He was an also a gadget guy, he loved the newest technology and was always reading the numerous catalogs that came to the mailbox every day! Charles had a way about him. He was a great listener. Folks always talked about his kind ways of talking and how he put total attention to the other person. That’s why when he spoke, he did so after much thought. Charles Eli Johnson was preceded in in death by both parents, Curlie Lee Johnson and Elliott Johnson of Charlotte, NC as well as his sister Helen Caldwell Charlotte, NC and his brothers, Horace Baggs Jacksonville, FL, Elliott Thomas Charlotte, NC and Wallace Johnson, Charlotte, NC. He leaves an extraordinary life to be treasured by his loving and devoted wife, Myra Stanley Johnson; his children Jeffrey S. Johnson (Nancy)and Timothy S. Johnson Charlotte NC; his siblings Annie Lee Black, Charlotte NC, Queen Esther Parsons(Melvin) Charlotte, NC, Celia Johnson Adams, Charlotte, NC, Curlie Diana Johnson, Charlotte, NC, and Robert C. Johnson (Lu) Charlotte, NC.; grandsons Alexander (Alex) Scott Johnson (Deceased), William (Will) J. Johnson Atlanta, GA, Goddaughter; Cherisma Hoffman, Godchildren; Paul and Dara Bailey Harrisburg, NC, grand Godchildren; Kyndall Baliey (Lil Bit) and Nicholas (Nick) Bailey Harrisburg, NC and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. Very special thanks to Charles’ caregivers Zandra Roberts, Annette Wilson and Andre Jackson and the VIA Team for the excellent care and support they gave to Charles and Myra. This great father, husband, son, brother, grandfather and uncle, this good and faithful servant, who loved the Lord with all his mind, body and soul, will always be in hearts and on our minds forever.
