Carol W. Roberts

Carol W. Roberts, aged 66, passed away peacefully on October 6, 2015 in Charlotte, NC. Carol was born March 6, 1949 in Asbury Park, New Jersey to Gene Watson and Melvie Edwards. She was lovingly and tenderly raised by Grace Bailey who instilled in her the importance of faith, love, and hope. Carol was a natural leader who dedicated both her professional career and Christian ministry to children. She enjoyed camp meeting, camping, nature, and singing. As a teenager at Hanson Place Seventh-day Adventist Church in Brooklyn, NY, she was both a soloist and a member of a singing trio with her sister Cindy McCoy. Carol graduated from John Jay High School and attended Medgar Evers College in Brooklyn, NY where she received formal training in Education. In 1977, Carol married George Roberts who shared her love of travel and laughter. Having met in New York City, George and Carol moved to Charlotte, North Carolina in 1978. In addition to raising her own children, Carol was known as a woman who took many under her wings. Her ability to love all was evident wherever she went. Carol was a faithful member of Berean Seventh-day Adventist Church and, later, an equally faithful and charter member of Northeast Seventh-day Adventist Church in Charlotte. She was a gifted writer, storyteller, Adventurer Leader, Pathfinder Leader, Sabbath School Teacher and overall supporter of efforts to raise children with a sincere love for God. It was also in Charlotte where her nearly 30-year career in Charlotte-Mecklenburg’s After-School Enrichment Program began. As a Site Coordinator and Program Associate, Carol not only trained but mentored many. Carol is survived by her loving husband, George; her children, Paul Gourdine (Alicia, wife) of Charlotte, NC and Tuesda Roberts of Pittsburgh, PA; her stepchildren, Vanessa Jenkins of Charlotte, NC and Joy Revels of Atlanta, Georgia; her grandchildren, Corey Gourdine (Sakira, wife), Tatyana Gourdine, Kelvin Jenkins, and Erving Jenkins. She is also survived by her siblings; Cindy McCoy, Audrey Reynolds-Edwards, Peggy Edwards, Frank Edwards, Martha Rae Ludley, Willie Earl, Ann Krutulewski, and Boyd Phillips; and a host of nieces and nephews.
