Walter Lee Gilmore

Walter Lee Gilmore (Shorty) was the fourth born to the late Robert Gilmore and Jessie Latta Gilmore on September 17,1928 in McConnells, South Carolina. He transitioned from his earthly life on Sunday, January 17, 2016 at the Novant Health Center in Charlotte, NC. Being obedient to The Will of the Master, he answered The Call and went quietly to sleep. Walter was a faithful member of Mount Zion Baptist Church. He loved his church and his entire church family. He served on many ministries which included the hymn choir, Men’s choir, the Brotherhood, Superintendent of Sunday School, and was a deacon. Walter also served his country during the Korean War as a Corporal in the United States Army. After returning home from Germany, he later was united in marriage to the late Carrie Bell Burris Gilmore. Walter loved to fish, hunt, bowl, tell jokes, and play cards. He also loved the game of baseball. He played with 2 baseball teams; one in McConnells and with the Charlotte Bombers. He was a great short stop and catcher. He was a devoted Dodger fan. In his younger years, Walt sang with a quartet group called “The Silver Trumpets”. He was the last surviving member. In addition to his parents and wife, Walter was preceded in death by a sister, Roberta Gilmore, a brother William Robert Gilmore, his youngest child, DeLisa Shante Gilmore, and a great grandson, Traylon Kamari Henderson (son of grandson Gregory Henderson). Walter leaves to cherish fond memories nine children: Mary F. Neal (Harry) of Rock Hill, S.C., Donald Gordon of the home, Jessie G. Henderson (Gregory) of High Point, N.C., D Gale Manning (Joe) of Gastonia, N.C., F. Delores Snead (Dexter), Phyllis Sanders, Minister Phyllis Frazier, Carolyn Gilmore-Williams (Samuel) all of Charlotte, N.C., and Jacqueline G. Barnett (Randy) of the home. One adopted daughter, Lorraine Jones of Charlotte, N.C. Seventeen grandchildren, seventeen great grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild. One beloved sister, Edna G. Rhodes of Rock Hill, S.C. One sister-in-law, Mattie Campbell (Willie) of Charlotte, N.C. A special nephew, James P. Gilmore (Betty), three special nieces, Mary Frances Hayes of New York, N.Y., Lillian Gilmore of Rock Hill, S.C., and Luveria Curry of McConnells, S.C. A special friend, Lydia Mayfield, and a host of other nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.
