Helen Delores Stitt Wilburn

Helen Delores Stitt Wilburn was born on October 9, 1941, to Estelle Delores Holmes and Robert J. Stitt in Charlotte, North Carolina. The joys in Helen’s life were her children, granddaughters, and great-grandson. While sleeping peacefully at home on Monday, October 23, 2023, she was called to rest with the Lord. Helen grew up in Charlotte in a close-knit family of her siblings, cousins, aunts and uncles. The matriarch of the family, Helen’s grandmother, Mozelle Holmes, nurtured Helen from birth along with other cousins who were around her age. Helen had a special life-long friendship with her cousin Perrie “Jackie” Perry-Wallace. The two were raised as sisters and were inseparable as young girls, teenagers and throughout their lives. She graduated from Second Ward High School in 1960. Helen’s teachers were especially drawn to her, and she developed close relationships with many of them. Throughout the years, she also maintained close friendships with her classmates. Helen worked as a nursing assistant at the rest home, Wesley’s Nursing Center, and later held several positions at Julie's clothing store in Charlotte for more than 20 years. Helen met and married Eugene Wilburn, and to that loving union a son and a daughter completed their family. Helen was devoted to her husband until his death and to her children until the very end. She also had a special bond with the Wilburn family. She adored her extended family and spent a lot of time with them creating life-long memories on holidays, family vacations and family reunions. She especially looked forward to the tradition of celebrating her loved ones every month with members of the family’s birthday club. Helen was a life-long member of East Stonewall A.M.E. Zion Church from the time it was located in the Brooklyn community. She sang on the choir and ushered as a teenager and much later served on the Pastor’s Aide Board and continued to be a devoted usher. Helen had a knack for remembering faces. She could look at a young person and tell them who their parents were. If she saw someone as a child, she could remember them years later as an adult. Helen was a bit of a fashionista in her younger days and kept up with the styles throughout her life. She enjoyed good music and was a very talented dancer. Helen is preceded in death by her husband, Eugene Wilburn; her parents, Estelle Holmes and Robert Stitt; her siblings Scottie Bernard Holmes, Beverly Holmes, and Kay Johnson. Helen was loved by many and leaves to mourn; her Son, Eugene Earl Wilburn; Daughter, Angela Wilburn; Granddaughters, Jamaya Marshall and Jada Jackson, and Great-grandson Jayden Marshall all of Charlotte, NC.; Brothers, John Franklin Holmes, and Derrick Holmes of Charlotte, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
