Betty Lou Hope

Betty Lou Hope was born on March 22nd 1945 to Myrtle Bailey & Robert Hope Sr. in Accomac, Virginia. She was called home to Heaven on September 6th 2017. She was 72 years old. Although our hearts are deeply saddened, we find strength and comfort in knowing that “to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord.” Betty Lou,” Ms. Betty” or “BT” as she was often referred to, was raised in Accomac, VA. She was the second youngest of seven children, and was very close to her sister Geraldine. BT attended Accomack County schools and later moved to New York. BT raised two sons and three daughters in Brooklyn, N.Y. and worked hard to provide for them. She also managed to attend night school to obtain her General Equivalency Diploma. In that time, she continued to raise her sons and daughters. She taught them to be strong, confident and respectful. BT took pride in instilling the same values in her children that her parents instilled in her, she loved all of her children just the same. BT’s hobbies included watching baseball, gameshows, cooking, and listening to music. But her favorite hobby was caring for her indoor garden. She had over 30 types of plants from the West Indies, West Africa, South America, and all over the world. BT also enjoyed watching the Mets play, Wheel of Fortune, Young and the Restless, or frying fish on a Friday night while listening to Maxwell’s “Urban Hang Suite”. She always knew how to have a good time. BT later decided to move back to her hometown of Accomac with her daughters where she pursued a career in healthcare. She attended college, earned her CNA certification, and graduated with honors. She went on to work in the field of healthcare until she retired, and later moved to North Carolina. BT loved spending time with her kids and grandkids. She also enjoyed bible study classes, watching her gospel programs, and singing in a choir. BT was kind, loving, caring and strong-willed. She was also meek and humble at times, but she was definitely one of a kind. BT will be deeply missed by her loved ones. BT was preceded in death by her older sisters: Dorothy, Virginia Mae, and Annie; her older brother Charles, her younger sister Geraldine and her oldest son Richard. Left to cherish her memories are: her brother Robert Jr., her four children, Daryl, Shameeka, Ashanti and Ketura, her nine grandchildren, two great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews great nieces and nephews, cousins and friends.
