Betty Jean Barber Patterson

Betty Jean Barber Patterson was born in Charlotte, North Carolina on February 13th, 1938. She was the third child and the third daughter to the late Mr. James Barber and the late Mrs. Annie Blanche Funderburk. She passed away at the age of 77 in the privacy of her home on October 5, 2015. Betty attended Billingsville Elementary School and graduated from Second Ward High School where she graduated with honors. Betty accepted Christ at a young age. She was a faithful member of Progressive Baptist Church. She was one of the founding members of Progressive Baptist Church where she served as a member of the musical choir. She enjoyed traveling to other churches to attend gospel concerts and she really enjoyed being able to sing with her daughters. She grew up in the Griertown/Stumptown Neighborhood of Charlotte. She continued to return to visit family and friends years after moving away. She really enjoyed attending the Griertown Reunions throughout the years. She was a very active member in the community. She was one of the 1st five residents of the Dalton Village Neighborhood after moving there in 1970 and she served several terms as President of the Dalton Village Community. She was also a generous contributor to charities. One of the many charities that she donated to was Feed The Children where she sponsored a child by the name of “Milki” from birth until his preteen years. Betty worked for the Head Start Pre-School Program as well as The University of North Carolina Charlotte. She served many years as a clerk for the Mecklenburg County Voting Polls. Her last employment was with her dear friends that she loved and considered family The Deramuses. She was preceded in her death by her father James Barber, mother Annie Blanche Funderburk Barber, husband Ernest Patterson, sister Julia McGadney and her daughter Trina Blanche Patterson. She leaves to cherish precious memories and to celebrate her life her sister Ernestine Barber of New York, NY; four daughters Twali “Trudy” Nelson (Richard), Tracy Barber Broome, Tredawn “Toadie” Annasteen Patterson and Talayrius “Tee” Davette Patterson;one son Tharon ”Emp” Barber Patterson and adopted son that she loved dearly Steven “Peewee” Peak; 5 grand-daughters Taque, Tiara, Tori, Triniya, and Tiyae; 4 grandsons Teref "Terone", Trevon, Tresmon and Tacarda; Five great-grandchildren Tremon, Tristian, Wisdom, Morgan and Noah all of Charlotte, NC;One uncle Raymond Funderburk (Alice)Waxhaw, NC and one special aunt Frances Funderburk-Phifer, Matthews, North Carolina and Two nephews Tanaka Stewart, Monroe, NC and Geoffrey Barber, Charlotte, NC two nieces Jana Barber, New York, NY and Marsha Barber, Charlotte, NC. Frances Nichols, Marianne Cayruth, Tracy Dorsey, Jerald Jones, Tavius Hall and Charles Jackson had a very special place in her heart.
