Bettie Spotards McLain

Bettie Spotards McLain was born October 14, 1941 in Moore County, NC to the late Marion Brooks and Nezzie McNair Hill and was raised by the late Myrtle and Edward Spotards. She departed this life on Sunday, September 12, 2021. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dennis McLain, Jr.; three sisters, Barbara McDonald, Patricia Hill and Gladys James and two brothers, William Hill and Edward Spotards, Jr. Bettie moved to Newburgh, NY with her family as an infant. She graduated from Newburgh Free Academy and worked at St. Luke’s Hospital. On December 20, 1959 she married the love of her life, Dennis McLain, Jr. and became a loving mother to three children; two daughters, Thereza Aldridge of Charlotte, NC and Topaze McLain Miller (Edward) of Harrisburg, NC and one son Dennis McLain III (Crystal) of Harrisburg, NC. Through her husband’s employment, Bettie and Dennis moved from Newburgh, NY to Raleigh, NC and then to Charlotte, NC. Bettie worked first as a Surgical Technician in the Labor and Delivery Department and later as an Administrative Assistant in the Emergency Room at Carolinas Medical Center for thirty plus years until her retirement. She loved playing cards and was an avid bowler and softball player until her health declined. Bettie was a former member of Galilean Deliverance Center and later became an active member of Bellefonte Presbyterian Church where she served on the Financial Oversight Committee, the church’s 150th Anniversary Committee, was a member of the Senior Bible study ministry and regularly attended Sunday school. She loved to quiz her grandchildren on Bible trivia and was always dressed in her Sunday finest. In addition to her immediate family, she leaves to cherish her memory her uncle, Charles Davis of Tallahassee, FL; brothers, Lawrence Hill (Gaye) of Atlanta, GA, Roger Spotards and Clayton Spotards of Newburgh, NY; sisters, Mary Smith (Willie) of Bainbridge, GA, Ada Spotards of Newburgh, NY and Teresa Tanner of Clayton, NC; seven loving grandchildren, Michael Aldridge II, Monica Ellis, Brittany Miller, Nicholas McLain, Courtney Miller, Mia McLain and Sydney Miller; six great-grandchildren, Myles Ellis, Jordyn Royster, Jadyn Royster, Malik Ellis, Jr., Kali Cornelius and Kayden Miller and a host of nieces and nephews and close relatives and friends.
