Hurbert Cordrington Finch

Hubert Codrington Finch, affectionately known as Poppie and AC, entered into eternal rest on Palm Sunday, March 29, 2015, at the age of 85. Hubert was born to Lena (deceased) and Willie Finch (deceased) in Dunn, N.C. on December 23, 1929 and was truly blessed to be one of 15 siblings. After finishing school, his life journey took him to Harlem, NY where he met and married Ethel M. Murray. He later was drafted in the US Army, where he served in the Korean War. He joined the Catholic Diocese (St. James Pro-Cathedral) in the early 1950’s and has remained committed to the faith until this day. He became devotedly involved as an active community leader with the Cub Scouts of America (Cub Master). He was a dedicated and astute husband/father and man of God. Hard work never was a hindrance for him as he was gainfully employed with the N.Y.C. Department of Sanitation, where he retired and mastered the skill of iron masonry. It was when he moved to Walterboro, S.C. (1975) he really turned up the heat. He owned and operated Finch Iron Works which became the most sought after business; mentored the children at St. James on Catholic Hill became a successful passion; he became a member of the Knights of Columbus; he single handedly built a hair salon for his wife; he raised chicken and calmed the day in his garden, etc., one can say, he was a self-taught jack of all trades and a master of all. He has received many certificates of honor for his various activities in the church and community. Through it all, he still had time to nurture and love his family and friends. Popularity was not unfamiliar to him, as he was loved by many. Upon his departure from Walterboro, S.C. to Charlotte, N.C., he left not one dry eye in the place, as he and his wife were honored with regrets. In Charlotte, N.C., he became an active member of the Men’s Group, and the Golden Wings at Our Lady of Consolation Catholic Church. He also could easily be found in his brown recliner at any given time, attached to his big magnetic smile. The legendary Hubert, Poppie, AC Finch leaves to honor and adore extraordinary memories, his loving and devoted wife, Ethel Finch; his three children, Gilda, Hubert(Nellie) and Valarie; Nine grandchildren: Tiffany Brown(Nathan), Kenneth Finch, Sr.(Donaca), Rashaune Davis(Tatia), Rayna Brown, Nakeisha Finch, Vallyn Brown, Vinel Brown, Nicolas Finch(Whitney), Rasheed Brown; Great grands: Isaiah, Amiyah, Kenneth, Jr., Ny’Keindra, Aliece and Arri; two sisters Louise and Shirley Finch; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends who will miss his genuine, cool, calm and collected personality.
